Please correct my English: Topic: American Dream Task: interpret the cartoon and relate it to the message of the article by Sunkara The cartoon created by Karsten Schley from cartoonstock.com shows us two middle aged men standing in ragged clothes next to each other, pleading for money. Both of them are wearing "please help!" signs over their neck. While the man on the right is holding a hat in his right hand, the man on the left side (the younger one), is only stretching his hand out. Those two are drawn very similar, so one could nearly think that these two are like father and son. A caption is indicated under the cartoon which is being said by the older one:" I begin like you, with nothing but my bare hands. Look at me now 25 years later, I'm beginning with my own hat! Geez, I love this country! Everyone can make it here!" This cartoon literally sticks hyperbolized to irony and ridicules the American Dream. All this man could afford after 25 years is only a hat and nothing more, although the American (2)

Dream depicts, that "everybody can make it here" and one can always start over again, "go where the grass is greener", or build up ones career from "dishwasher to millionaire".All of us have heard about these typical "brainwashing" sentences, but until which point are these slogans even true? It is a fact, that in the novel "Half Broke Horses" the protagonist, Lily -a fearless, confident woman- takes every opportunity like vitamins and has the pioneer spirit running through her veins. She was actually the living legend -who still symbolizes-, and is the best example for reaching the "perfect" American Dream, while not even thinking of giving up. Nevertheless the article concerning Bhaskar Sunkara's opinion on the American Dream enlightens much more, and connects with the cartoon. The author of "The American Dream rewards few, enslaves millions" criticizes the idea of the American Dream. He points out that all the American society focuses on, is the luck and triumph of oneself and that "the hardship of sickness in a country [...] is whitewashed into a formative tale about overcoming obstacles". Mr. Sunkara insists on the fact, that the American Dream is being idealized by the society and is much more of a "myth" rather than the reality, and this is also the main critic in the cartoon. It just shows us, that one can not make it that easily in America. Of course, some have fulfilled their dream and reached their goals, one can not just exclude this truth, but the majority is still struggling. Otherwise, until yet all dishwashers should have become millionaires.

You don't need the comma here: "the man on the left side (the younger one) is only stretching his hand out""They are drawn very similarly" - "Those two" sounds strange unless there are more characters in the cartoon. Your description makes it sound like they are the only ones. "There is a caption under the cartoon which is being said by the older one:" I began like you, with nothing but my bare hands. Look at me now 25 years later, I'm begging with my own hat! Geez, I love this country! Everyone can make it here!" "This cartoon literally sticks hyperbolized to irony and ridicules the American Dream." - I am not sure what you mean here. Maybe, "This cartoon use hyperbole and irony to ridicule the American dream.""Although the American Dream depicts that "everybody can make it here" and one can always start over again, "go where the grass is greener", or build up ones career from "dishwasher to millionaire," all this man could afford after 25 years is only a hat and nothing more. " - I'm not sure the saying about the grass being greener fits here, but maybe it comes from the article? "The grass is always greener on the other side." is the saying this brings to mind and it means that you should be content with where you are what you have because however you are dreaming of living will have negatives too. Anyway, I don't think it fits this theme. "She was actually the living legend who still symbolizes and is the best example of reaching the "perfect" American Dream while not even thinking of giving up."
